More About Rotherhithe
Rotherhithe – a residential district in the south east area of London and also part of the London Borough of Southwark. It is located near the London’s centre point (4,5 km east of it). The name is given from the Anglo-Saxons and in the past was replaced with Redriff.
Three tunnels join this area to Themes’ north bank and an interesting fact is that there is an underwater tunnel called Themes foot, built by Brunels. This is the first underwater tunnel in the world. The original idea for it has been the carrying of trans-river freight, but from 1869 was used for other purposes. Today, the Thames foot tunnel is a London Overground Network’s part.
